Your workers compensation rates will depend upon a number factors, and many of them cannot really be under control by one business. Some of the “out of control” workers compensation factors are the state rate basis, industry safety record, type of business, etc. However, after the first year of a workers compensation policy, rates are influenced by an individual company’s safety record, and that should be something under a business owner’s influence!
You can put safety programs in place. Many insurers will look at a good workplace safety record, and put that company in a preferred rate class with much lower workers comp rates! A workplace safety program will also show employees that a business is concerned about their safety, and that should save money in turnover and good morale. And of course, a workplace safety program, is the right thing to do!
Find an experienced workers compensation insurance agency. Some programs even include a premium “dividend”. In other words, if the company safety record is better than the record that the insurance company anticipated when they set the price, they will actually refund a portion of premium or credit next year’s premium.
